The CLG Methodology
Customer-Led Growth is an operating model for B2B software and AI companies. It aligns sales, marketing, customer success and product around the measurable outcomes customers are trying to achieve. This is implemented in a way that delivers profitable revenue for the supplier.
CLG is not a tactic, a tool, or a single function. It is the connective tissue that decides what every GTM function optimises for, measures, and reports against.
We help our customers design and implement CLG by building six key capabilities; embedding them in shared frameworks, process, systems, skills and behaviours.
Six key CLG capabilities we implement
There are six keys to successful CLG implementation. Each is listed below, including 'How' CLG Forum helps companies implement them.
1. Deep, shared understanding of target customers
WHAT: All GTM teams have a shared understanding of the measurable results that matter to key roles in your chosen customers
WHY: Minimise CAC,
HOW: Customer Results Framework and ICP built around a common results library
2. Results-led sales
WHAT: New logo, renewal and expansion sales motions are customer results driven
WHY: Results-led selling increases win rates for all sales motions
HOW: Business case templates, MEDDIC 4 Results and skills training
3. Outside-in customer lifecycle
WHAT: A high-level view of buyer/customer jobs to be done across the lifecycle
WHY: Ensure that customers receive a joined-up experience
HOW: Lifecycle design and implementation
4. Company AND customer metrics
WHAT: Track both unit economics and customer value metrics
WHY: What gets measured gets improved
HOW: Design, implement and cascade an Executive Two-Column dashboard
5. Results focused product
WHAT: Product design and roadmap prioritisation to maximise revenue and customer results
WHY: Product is the primary vehicle for vale enablement and it's margin effective
HOW: Wireframes and flows to embed enablement in product; roadmap process redesign
6. Active leadership
WHAT: Leaders that walk the talk.
WHY: Words speak: actions shout
HOW: Executive education and coaching
How CLG Differs From Adjacent Approaches
- vs Product-Led Growth (PLG)
- PLG uses the product as the primary acquisition motion. CLG is motion-agnostic: sales-led, product-led, partner-led companies can all run a CLG operating model.
- vs Customer Success
- Customer Success is a function inside a company. CLG is the operating model that the whole GTM organisation runs on. CS is an input into CLG, not a replacement for it.
- vs Account-Based Marketing
- ABM is a targeting and orchestration tactic. CLG defines which outcomes — and therefore which accounts — are worth orchestrating around in the first place.
- vs RevOps
- RevOps optimises the systems and data that move revenue through the funnel. CLG decides what the funnel should be measuring and rewarding in the first place.
Adopting CLG
- Diagnose. Run the free CLG Assessment to score your current maturity across the six keys and see where misalignment is leaking revenue.
- Design. A 4–6 week GTM Design Sprint produces a customer-results-aligned operating model, scoreboard and roadmap.
- Implement. A 90 to 180 day implementation rewires processes, metrics and incentives across GTM.
- Sustain. Ongoing coaching and the always-on CLG AI advisor keep the operating model embedded as the company scales.
Methodology FAQ
What is Customer-Led Growth?
Customer-Led Growth (CLG) is a B2B go-to-market operating model that aligns sales, marketing, customer success and product around the measurable outcomes customers are trying to achieve. Revenue is treated as a downstream effect of delivered customer results.
How is CLG different from Product-Led Growth (PLG)?
PLG uses the product itself as the primary acquisition and conversion motion. CLG is broader: it covers any GTM motion (sales-led, product-led, partner-led) and asks whether the whole company is organised around customer outcomes, not whether the first touch is the product.
How is CLG different from Customer Success?
Customer Success is a function inside the company. CLG is an operating model across all GTM functions. CS is one input into CLG, not a substitute for it.
How is CLG different from Account-Based Marketing (ABM)?
ABM is a targeting and orchestration tactic for marketing and sales. CLG is the operating model that decides which accounts and outcomes are worth orchestrating around in the first place.
Who is CLG for?
B2B software and AI companies, typically post-Series-A through growth stage, where retention, expansion and capital efficiency now matter as much as new logo acquisition.
How long does it take to adopt CLG?
A focused GTM Design Sprint takes 4–6 weeks. Implementation of the operating model is typically a 90 to 180 day program, with measurable changes in pipeline quality, win rate and NRR visible inside two quarters.
